A House on a Hill

GÖKHAN GÖKSEVEN

22 DECEMBER - 26 JANUARY 2019

PİLOT is happy to host Gökhan Gökseven’s first solo show “A house on a hill”. The exhibition features a new series of paintings based on Gökseven’s central concern: loneliness.

When nothing ever turns out as expected, everyone fails and people are frustrated, solitude is a bliss. Gökhan Gökseven’s paintings see the potential beauty in loneliness.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Gökseven’s artistic development. One could clearly see his determination throughout the show. Moments of rupture, departures, breaking points trigger him. The artist like picking off scabs and opening old wounds. Gökseven’s intention is not orienting viewers to a discovery of his thoughts or his inner world within these paintings but to an expedition to their own. These paintings serve as lightning rods for other people’s fears and fantasies.

Artist treat loneliness in a wide range of contexts. He adopts a poetic rhythm rather than a strict narrative. You see grumpy cats, angry rednecks, fat dudes detached from their surrounding. Sometimes a scenery without human or animal. Cute figures with melancholic atmospheres. A combination of curiosity, fear and hope.

In an era where the pressure to appear perfect is greater than ever, he depicts the awkward. His canvases wield the power of vulnerability. Collectively, they could be a response to social order.
