BURNT PALACES

HALE ARSLAN,  CAN KÜÇÜK,  GÖKHAN GÖKSEVEN

12 MAY - 16 JUNE

Pilot presents “Burnt Palaces” from 12 May to 16 June, an exhibition featuring three young artists’ work in different mediums. Hale Arslan, Can Küçük and Gökhan Gökseven evoke the breaking points, moments of rupture as well as the outbursts that refer to a disappeared past, to a time and place left behind.

Does one need to cover its emotional cracks? How do moments of rupture and transition feel like? Is there a reason to hide away from disappointment? “Burnt Palaces” doesn’t describe or narrate personal stories and traumas, rather, it foregrounds the tensions, fears and sadness- collectively shared emotions felt at turning points in history. While expressing feelings of anxiety, unrest, and impending loss through objects, paintings, and sound waves, each artist finds a tone all his own, from calm to melancholic to violent. Burns, fires, fractures, broken and shattered pieces enhance further the feeling that something is awry. Each moment becomes immensely relatable and familiar. In this way, every single work in the exhibition asks the viewer: “where is /was your rupture?”.

Hale Arslan graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts Painting Department in 2017. That same year she participated in Base Istanbul at Galata Greek School. She is one of the shortlisted artists of “bang. Art Innovation Prix 2018” show that recently opened in Maslak and will run through 18 May. She lives and works in Istanbul.

Can Küçük studied Industrial Design at Bilgi University and graduated in 2017. He learned jewelry design at Nazan Pak & Ela Cindoruk atelier (ECNP Gallery) and ceramics at Aslı Aydemir atelier (atelier 13). His work has been exhibited in Mamut Art Project, Young Fresh Different VI (Gallery Zilberman), Oxytocin (Das Art Project.), Genetically Modified (“BAHAR” Istanbul Off-site project for Sharjah Biennial 13, Das Art Project.), and “Uniform Behaviour” (bomontiada Alt). He was in the design team of the MÇPS project (Manifaturacılar Çarşısı Plakçılık Sunar, Project: Can Altay, Production: Amira Arzık). He lives and works in Istanbul.

Gökhan Gökseven graduated from Ringling College of Art & Design Department of Illustration in 2013. He completed his MFA in New York Academy of Art, Department of Painting in 2015.
