GÖZDE MİMİKO TÜRKKAN

Mimiko (Gözde ‘Mimiko’ Türkkan) (b.1984) is an artist based in Istanbul who produces photography series, make use of artist’s books, text-based works and videos.
 
Her works focuses on gender roles and identities while attempting to shed light to some of the deepest drives, desires and fears of the human being through a subjective documentary approach. Mimiko’s works make the viewer question stereotypes and preconceptions, power struggles and how these are manipulated.
 
After receiving her BA degree in 2008, Mimiko worked as a photography course instructor in the Visual Communication Design Department of the same university. She completed her education in the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design where she received her MA Fine Art degree in 2010.
 
She has been traveling to different countries and areas such as Ukraine, United Kingdom, France (Pay Here series, 2010 and Fight-Flight-Freeze series, 2013), Thailand (Full Contact series, 2011) and Japan, Sweden, Portugal (Wish Tree series, 2015) for the realisation of most of her previous works, and recently to the Swiss Alps, Siberia and Bali Island for her ongoing works.
 
In 2011, Mimiko opened her first solo show Looking Back at You, in Operation Room followed by three more in Istanbul in 2012, 2013, 2015 and two in La Rochelle, France in 2017 and 2018.
